First of many lessons...

learned.

I had my first near miss on the weekend.  Riding along the river path, I was attempting to pass a couple on the left having signaled them with my bell.  When a bike came speeding off the bike bridge and right toward me.  I swerved to avoid a collision running off the edge of the concrete path and back onto the path.  I had the presence to stay up right and was thinking myself pretty cool.  What I didn't realize was the incident caused my wheel to be dented on the back.  The next day, I was off to another biking adventure and the tire was flat, flat, flat.

I didn't feel up to changing it myself, even though I had attended my first REI bike maintenance seminar just the 4 days prior.  So 'threw' it in the back of the van and off to my LBS.  Where they quickly and efficiently popped the tire, showed me the huge blowout and reassembled the tube, tire onto the wheel.  It was fairly obvious from the bulge I would be needing a new rim.  I managed to log 21 miles that day, but later in the week, the bulge was not to be ignored.  Off to another of my LBS's (our town is blessed with such a fantastic variety) spreading my cycling dollars around the local economy.  I now have a new rim and am anxious to get back on my bike.

Needing to keep track of my lessons:

accidents happen in the blink of an eye, I am blessed it was a rim that took the hit, and not ME!

There's always a first step

or pedal as I am thinking for this first post.  You might have heard the Lao Tzer quote, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." Well, I am certain I will pedal many miles more in preparing to reach my dream for 2013.

More about that as the pedal turns...
